Why Cockroaches Are Getting Worse in Melbourne in 2026 (And How to Stop Them)

If you’ve been noticing more cockroaches in and around your Melbourne home recently, you are not imagining it. Pest control professionals across Victoria are reporting elevated call volumes for cockroach infestations in 2026, and there are clear, well-understood reasons why this year has been particularly bad.

The good news is that cockroach infestations are entirely treatable. The bad news is that the longer you wait, the more deeply established the colony becomes – and the harder and costlier it becomes to fully eliminate.

Why 2026 Has Been a Bad Year for Cockroaches in Melbourne

Cockroaches are ectothermic – their body temperature, and therefore their reproduction rate, activity, and colony expansion, are entirely governed by ambient conditions. In warm, humid conditions, cockroaches breed faster, forage more aggressively, and spread further than in cooler periods.

The 2025–26 summer extended the prime breeding window for cockroaches across Victoria. According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s seasonal outlooks, Melbourne experienced above-average temperatures throughout the 2025–26 summer period, which directly extends cockroach breeding cycles before the cooler months can slow them down.

Three additional factors are driving the surge in 2026:

The autumn transition. Melbourne is currently moving into autumn – the period when cockroach populations that built up outdoors during summer most actively seek warmth inside homes. The cooler nights push them inward. Right now is the peak window for infestations entering properties.

Cost of living pressure. Research by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has documented sustained household cost pressures across Victoria. Many households have deferred professional pest treatments, giving existing populations additional time to establish deeply in wall cavities and subfloor areas.

Increased urban density. New apartment developments and townhouse estates create the shared walls, connected plumbing systems, and high-density refuse conditions that cockroaches exploit to spread between properties.

The Most Important Thing to Understand About Cockroaches

For every cockroach you see during the day, there are estimated to be 30 or more that you are not seeing.

Cockroaches are nocturnal. Spotting them in daylight – or seeing them frequently in lit areas at night – is a strong indicator of population pressure. There are simply too many cockroaches in their preferred harbourage areas for the colony to remain hidden.

According to Pest Management Association of Australia (PMA), common household cockroach species in Victoria include:

  • German cockroach (Blattella germanica) – the most problematic species for internal infestations. Rapid breeders. Strong preference for kitchen and bathroom environments near warmth and moisture.
  • American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) – larger, reddish-brown. Common in subfloor areas, roof cavities, and sewage infrastructure.
  • Australian cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae) – typically found in roof spaces and garden areas, moving indoors during cooler months.

Common hiding locations in Melbourne homes include:

  • Inside kitchen appliances – behind the refrigerator motor, under the dishwasher, inside the oven cavity housing
  • Wall voids around plumbing, especially under kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Behind skirting boards in kitchens and bathrooms
  • In ceiling and subfloor cavities
  • In cardboard boxes, paper bags, and stored goods in pantries and garages

Why DIY Treatments Keep Failing

Supermarket sprays and domestic cockroach baits are designed to address surface-level pest activity. They kill the cockroaches they directly contact. What they cannot do:

  • Penetrate wall cavities or reach internal harbourage areas
  • Access the compacted colonies behind appliances and inside voids
  • Eliminate egg cases (oothecae) – which are resistant to most surface-applied products

A single German cockroach egg case contains 30 to 48 eggs. According to CSIRO’s research on urban pest species, a single fertile female can produce multiple egg cases throughout her lifespan of 100–200 days, creating hundreds of offspring from a single individual.

If a treatment doesn’t address the breeding colony – not just the cockroaches that are visible – the infestation returns. Often within weeks. Sometimes worse than before. This is the cycle that leads many Melbourne homeowners to spend repeatedly on supermarket products without ever solving the problem.

What Professional Cockroach Treatment Does Differently

A licensed pest control technician from Mr Pest Controller approaches a cockroach infestation fundamentally differently from a surface spray.

A thorough inspection first. The technician identifies all active infestation points, entry pathways, and harbourage areas – not just where cockroaches are visible on the surface.

Targeted gel baiting. Gel bait is applied precisely in the locations where cockroaches feed and harbour. Cockroaches carry the bait back into the colony, where it spreads through shared feeding and contact to individuals the technician never directly reached. This is the mechanism that eliminates the colony – not just the visible population.

Residual treatment in critical zones. Insecticide is applied inside wall voids, behind appliances, and around plumbing – the actual locations where cockroaches live and breed.

Crack and crevice treatment. Every identified entry point and harbourage crack is treated directly.

Prevention advice. Your technician will advise on food storage, moisture management, and simple sealing measures that significantly reduce the likelihood of re-infestation after treatment.

After a professional treatment, it is completely normal to see increased cockroach activity for one to two weeks. This is the affected colony being disrupted. Cockroaches emerging during daylight hours in particular are showing signs of the treatment working. Give the treatment time to run its course before drawing conclusions about its effectiveness.

Health Risks You Should Not Ignore

Cockroaches are not simply an aesthetic problem. According to the World Health Organization, cockroaches are known carriers of bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli, capable of contaminating food preparation surfaces, utensils, and stored food. They have also been identified as a trigger for asthma and allergic responses – particularly in children – through their shed skin, droppings, and saliva.

A growing cockroach infestation in your home is a genuine health matter, not just a nuisance.

How Much Does Professional Cockroach Treatment Cost in Melbourne?

Mr Pest Controller’s general pest treatment – which covers cockroaches, ants, spiders, and silverfish – starts from $220 for a standard residential property. For severe or long-established infestations, a follow-up treatment is sometimes recommended at approximately six weeks.

The cost of professional treatment is almost always significantly less than the cumulative cost of repeated supermarket products, food contamination losses, and potential health impacts – and a fraction of the cost of addressing a pest problem that was allowed to become entrenched over several months.

Act Now – Before the Colony Gets Larger

Every week you delay gives the colony additional time to expand and become more deeply embedded. An infestation that is manageable in April 2026 becomes significantly harder to treat by June.

Do not spray supermarket products before your professional treatment – this can scatter the colony into new areas and reduce the effectiveness of professional baiting methods.
